SIGNIFICANCE OF THE PAINTINGS

THE MASK- 23/06/2020
The Mask could symbolize numerous things. Be it’s ancient purpose in spiritual sacraments, or its ability to ward off evil as the kirtimukhas (visages of glory). Masks could conceal smiles and tears but can as plainly surface emotions to the viewer, delving into the deepest souls. They are probably the most versatile and powerful emblems in history.
To me, the Mask is mysterious-I do not know the face that lies behind it. “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth.” Is a quote by Oscar Wilde that I think encapsulates the painting. But the Mask is open to interpretation. Set your mind free to explore what it means to you.

SHADE OF THE BODHI TREE- 11/06/2020

Bodhi, a Sanskrit word for enlightenment, is the Buddhist abstraction of spiritual awakening. The tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment goes by the same name.
Several interpretations of how he reached this state are left to further study. However, I believe the very essence and ecosystem coursing through the veins of the Bodhi tree, under which the Buddha took shelter, catalysed his transcendence.
This is what inspired my painting, tinges of azure streaming in the branches giving rise to the powerful, spiritually golden state of Bodhi.
WAVE OF HOPE- 09/06/2020
Wave of Hope is a symbol. The unhindered periodicity of waves represents mankind’s strong, undying hope for a better and brighter tomorrow. Despite the rocks we fumble over and the bleak times we are forced through, our stubborn perseverance and belief drives us all the way to the shore...
I painted this during the time when the cases in India started accelerating. It gave me strength knowing that, like the water encompassing this powerful wave, we could overcome this pandemic together.
