The Mask could symbolize numerous things. Be it’s ancient purpose in spiritual sacraments, or its ability to ward off evil as the kirtimukhas (visages of glory). Masks could conceal smiles and tears but can as plainly surface emotions to the viewer, delving into the deepest souls. They are probably the most versatile and powerful emblems in history.

To me, the Mask is mysterious-I do not know the face that lies behind it. “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask and he will tell you the truth.” Is a quote by Oscar Wilde that I think encapsulates the painting. But the Mask is open to interpretation.
